Along with academic excellence and community service, the applicant must demonstrate excellence in an athletic sport for a minimum of two years during his/her high school career.  Applicant should also encompass leadership qualities within the sport/team as demonstrated with awards and accolades highlighting good sportsmanship, a positive attitude and/or using his/her athletic skills to better the community. Athletic teams can include, but are not limited to, football, baseball, basketball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, swimming, track and field, volleyball, cheerleading, golf, etc.

 

FOREIGN LANGUAGE / LANGUAGE ARTS

Along with academic excellence and community service, the applicant must demonstrate and exhibit excellence in the area of Foreign Language and/or Language Arts during his/her high school career.

Excellence in Foreign Language(s) is demonstrated by a proficiency in second-language skills through listening, speaking, reading, writing, and understanding sentence-length speech, and handling a limited number of spoken communicative tasks and situations.  Applicant must also have knowledge of another culture in terms of contemporary life, the arts, geography, history, and literature. Applicants must also exhibit leadership in advancing multicultural awareness while using his/her Foreign Language(s) skills as demonstrated with awards and accolades highlighting achievement in the Foreign Language within the school and the community.

Excellence in Language Arts is demonstrated by an outstanding achievement or potential in the written and oral communication areas through the exhibition of written work, oral/audio/video presentations, debate team, and portfolios of writing, reading, or viewing which may incorporate the use of current technological tools.  Applicants must also exhibit leadership in advancing the awareness of Language Arts as demonstrated with awards and accolades highlighting achievement in the subject matter within the school and the community.
*Please note: Those students who excel in the area of Speech & Debate should apply in the Foreign Language/Language Arts Category and NOT the Performing Arts/Visual Arts Category.


PERFORMING ARTS / VISUAL ARTS

Along with academic excellence and community service, the applicant must demonstrate and exhibit excellence in the area of Performing Arts  and/or Visual Arts.

Excellence in Performing Arts is demonstrating and exhibiting excellence in one or more of the following disciplines:  1) Theatre: Expression of individual acting concepts and skills through improvisation, characterization in classical and contemporary production styles. Applicant must demonstrate participation in the technical/crew area of school or community performances or performance of a role in a school or community production; 2) Instrumental: Demonstration of a developed ability to play with confidence, good posture, excellent tone quality, and proper technique and intonation in both solo and ensemble settings. Applicant must also demonstrate composition ability and knowledge of the musical and cultural characteristics of the major style periods of music; 3) Dance: Demonstration of a developed ability to dance with confidence, grace, good position, technique and rhythm. Applicant must also demonstrate the ability to choreograph simple pieces and the knowledge of the musical and cultural characteristics of the major style periods of dance; 4) Vocal: Demonstration of a developed ability to sing with excellent pitch, technique and intonation, and with the correct notes and rhythms appropriate to the musical score. Applicant must also demonstrate the ability to vocalize simple pieces of varying styles.  Applicants must also exhibit leadership in advancing the awareness of the Performing Arts as demonstrated with awards and accolades highlighting achievement in the subject matter within the school and the community.  
*Please note: Those students who excel in the area of Speech & Debate should apply in the Foreign Language/Language Arts Category and NOT the Performing Arts Category.

Excellence in Visual Arts is demonstrating and exhibiting excellence, knowledge and creative work in the following areas: works that are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, filmmaking and architecture. Application must demonstrate the knowledge of the elements and principals of design and execution. Applicant must also demonstrate confident expression of individual ideas, feelings and observations through creative works of art and an understanding and appreciation for the role of art history and artists in past and present cultures. Also included within the visual arts are the applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art. Applicants must also exhibit leadership in advancing the awareness of Visual Arts as demonstrated with awards and accolades highlighting achievement in the subject matter within the school and the community.



LEADERSHIP/SERVICE

Along with academic excellence, applicant must demonstrate extensive leadership roles within his/her school along with a strong commitment to service within the community and volunteer programs. Applicants must demonstrate this by providing details on awards and accolades highlighting achievement in leadership roles and service within the school and the community.  Applicant must also provide the amount of service hours volunteered within each of the community organizations.  Applicants must have a minimum 150 service hours completed by the time the Salute to Education scholarship application is submitted.



MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES/COMPUTER SCIENCES

Along with academic excellence in the classroom and community service, applicant must demonstrate and exhibit excellence in the areas of Mathematical Sciences and/or Computer Sciences.

Excellence in Mathematical Sciences is demonstrating excellence in innovative problem solving, utilization of technology to enhance problem solving, and application of creative, logical, and analytical thinking in mathematical sciences.  Excellence should be demonstrated by contributing to mathematical knowledge through individual or group research; by fostering interest in advanced mathematics; by tutoring in mathematics, or by using computer science to benefit the community. Applicant must have participated in peer tutoring, academic competition and mathematics club membership along with mathematical course work.  Applicant must have demonstration of outstanding performance in any/all of the following areas: 1) Advanced placement mathematics classes such as trigonometry, pre-calculus, or calculus; 2) Classes where mathematics are applied, such as engineering, computerized business courses, or drafting (CAD). Applicants must also exhibit leadership in advancing the awareness of Mathematical Sciences as demonstrated with awards and accolades highlighting achievement in the subject matter within the school and the community.

Excellence in Computer Sciences is demonstrating excellence in areas of computer science including computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, database management, computer networking, computer programming and information technology management.  Applicants must also exhibit leadership in advancing the awareness of Computer Sciences as demonstrated with awards and accolades highlighting achievement in the subject matter within the school and the community.

*Please note: If you have vas experience in the area of robotics and engineering you should apply in mathematical sciences because of the engineering aspect.



NATURAL SCIENCE

Along with academic excellence in the classroom and community service, applicant must demonstrate and exhibit excellence in an area of Natural Science.  Excellence in Natural Science is demonstrated through advanced study or application of Natural Science including, but not limit to, the study and principles of chemistry, physics, biology, botany, earth and space sciences, physiology and other specific areas, or by encouraging study in these areas. Other service or activities may include promoting the preservation of the environment or working to save an endangered species.  Applicants must also exhibit leadership in advancing the awareness of Natural Science as demonstrated with awards and accolades highlighting achievement in the subject matter within the school and the community.

*Please note: If you have vas experience in the area of robotics and engineering you should apply in mathematical sciences because of the engineering aspect.
